The entry requirements for a fire-fighter are  as follows:

 •       Grade 10 or higher qualification

       Physically Fit

       Not be scared of heights (acrophobia)

       Not be scared of confine spaces (Claustrophobia)

       Be able to communicate in 2 of the official languages

 Vacancies are normally advertised in the Local and Community newspapers. Applicants must quote the reference number of the advertised position when submitting their CV’s. Candidates are subjected to stringent physical and medical assessments as well as a written evaluation which includes mathematics and comprehension. A interview is conducted with candidates who are successful with the assessments.

Please note that when these positions are advertised that there is normally thousands of applications and only the best candidates are selected.

We do however also recruit Seasonal fire-fighters and Reservist. Seasonal fire-fighters work for on a 6 month contract during the Summer season (i.e. November – April). Reservist, are candidates who have permanent employment, but who want to serve the community. They are allowed to work 40 hours a month and are paid a minimum hourly allowance .They can be called upon during emergency situations to render a service.

Physical Science and Mathematics subjects would be advantageous for progression in the Fire Service.

Training is presented by the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service for successful candidates and is approximately of  6 months duration. There are  no cost to the candidates whilst undergoing training.
